Emily Jernigan

Picture
Emily Jernigan Swinney has been weaving baskets and learning the Art of Basketry for 22 years now. She took her first basketry class with Chuck and Peggy Patrick at the Rivercane Rendezvous and fell in love with the process right away. Her teachers through the years have included Emma Jackson Garret, Nancy basket, Laura Roscoe, April Stone Dahl, Scott Gilbert, Beth Hester, Bill and Mary Smith and many more.

Emily loves the natural world and all the basket material you can find in it. She is always experimenting with new and different natural basketry materials wherever she goes. Among her favorites are Black Ash, White Oak, Rivercane and Palm Fronds.

Basket Weaver...Basket Teacher

Picture
Emily has been teaching Basketry and Hand Weaving to adults and children for the past 12 years. She has taught at primitive skills gatherings, summer camps, after school programs and The Organic Growers School. Currently she is focusing her energy on teaching public and private classes in Asheville and surrounding areas.

Emily enjoys teaching almost as much as she enjoys weaving baskets. She is always working on improving her teaching methods and collecting new skills to share. Emily is blessed to have dear friends in the basket community that are also some of her greatest teachers
